Termite Inspection & Control in Baton Rouge, Louisiana
There are about 2,700 species of termites around the world, but only a few of them are pests. Termites love tropical conditions, therefore the hot and humid climate of Louisiana is an ideal nesting ground for them. Gregg Henderson, entomologist at the LSU AgCenter, indicated in 2015 that termites were responsible for $300 million in losses in the Greater New Orleans area alone.
The two most prevalent termite species in Louisiana are drywood and subterranean termites. One very destructive species, the Formosan Subterranean Termite (FST), is spreading across Louisiana; that’s why it is so important to have regularly scheduled termite inspections done on your home.
The Fierce Formosan
Do not underestimate these minute insects, they are incredibly organized and ferocious when it comes to attacking a structure. The Formosan Subterranean Termite operates on a simple caste system made up of 3 populations:
Reproductives: Most times there is only 1 pair, a queen and a king, whose sole purpose is to produce eggs.
Workers: This is by far the largest population and they are certainly industrious. Worker FSTs build nests and find food for the colony, and they care for the eggs and the young.
Soldiers: As the title indicates, these are the protectors of the colony. They have large jaws that can attack with a scissor-like action, but thanks to these large mouthparts, they cannot chew, so they must be fed by the workers.
As a property owner, it is important to watch for signs of termite infestation. During the warmer months of May-July, you will see more swarms of termites, but that does not necessarily mean your home or business is infested. Signs of infestation to be aware of are:
Soft or rotting wood
Holes in wood like floorboards, baseboards, rafters
Mud tube trails on concrete around perimeter
